MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS INCREDIBLE NEWS![ps2id id='MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS INCREDIBLE NEWS!' target=''/]
An forthcoming summer expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game will incorporate artwork based on the 3D animals from mobile augmented reality game Pokémon Go. The Pokémon Company’s statement is a little thin on facts at now but classifies the card set as a cooperation between them and Niantic.
The team-up seems natural considering the enduring popularity of the mobile game and Pokémon TCG’s supposedly ageless appeal. Publisher Niantic introduced Pokémon Go in 2016, encouraging a rush of users across the globe to explore their towns and communities for randomly created pocket monsters. While it never managed to keep that first high, the game has had a large and committed user base and steady development cycle of new content.
But this will be the first time the mobile game’s take on Pokémon will appear on official cards (though a Google search populates plenty of fakes) (though a Google search populates plenty of fakes). The release just states the expansion “will contain cards inspired by the popular mobile game”, leaving fans to speculate what else will convert to cardboard.
The free-to-play mobile aspect of Pokémon Go’s gameplay means Niantic made certain liberties with the series' long-standing features. Pokémon evolution needs candies gained by trading in animals of the same kind, so lots of Pikachus need to be fed to the digital grist mill to change the tiny mascot into Raichu.
The easiest method to locate Pokémon is through visiting Pokéstops that frequently correspond to real-world landmarks and sites, dropping lures to improve the spawn rate.
There’s also a rough story framework based around the three teams players may join when they initially begin playing. Each team has a captain, and like earlier entries a Pokémon professor sticks around to give assistance and tasks.
Whether any of Pokémon Go’s unique advancements will find themselves portrayed in cards is an open topic. The booster pack depicted in the announcement does contain the backpack-toting Professor Willow, a Pokéstop and a Blissey defending a gym.
Pokémon TCG has been one of the most successful trading card games since its inception and had a rise in popularity in 2020 and 2021, in large part because to a craze of YouTubers breaking rare booster boxes live on their channels. The secondary market for ultra-rare singles and wrapped first-edition booster boxes swelled at the same time as current merchandise flew off the shelves of retail outlets and local gaming shops.
Dicebreaker has reached out to Niantic and The Pokémon Company for additional details regarding the summer expansion but did not hear back before publishing. A digital client for the card game, Pokémon TCG Live, was expected by the end of 2021 but announced a postponement until later this year. If that persists, 2022 will be a busy period for enthusiasts of both real and digital pocket monsters.
