It’s a little hard to believe, but Pokémon Go has been out for almost a full year. To celebrate, Niantic Labs announced that it’s planning a number of in-game and in-person events.

The game's first major event, dubbed the Solstice Event, will take place. This event will take place on June 13th, and it will contain Fire-type and Ice-type pokémon, XP bonuses, and cheap Lucky Eggs. The developers also revealed that a new update focusing on collaborative gaming would be released shortly, hinting to a "new method" to play the game, but will also temporarily shut down in-game gyms.

Fans of the game may also attend the first in-person event in July: Pokémon Go Fest Chicago,

This is set to take place on July 22nd, 2017. The event's tickets will go on sale on June 19th. (Pricing and a schedule are not yet published, so it's uncertain what will happen during the event.) Further events are planned for Europe between July and September, while Japan will have "Pikachu Outbreak" in Yokohama in August. Additional information about these events will be released soon.

It is unknown what the upcoming collaborative gameplay update will include.

It's reported that the firm is giving the gyms a facelift to deter cheating, and that raids are on the way. Enabling gamers to form teams or compete against one another in gyms seems like a sensible next step. Pokémon has always been a very collaborative phenomenon, and the focus on players not just playing against one other, but meeting each other in real life, has been credited with making it the powerhouse that it is today.


 

Pokemon has never just been about enslaving a race of tiny animals and forcing them to fight for you. It's also about meeting new people and connecting with them via a common interest. This is why the Pokemon Go Fest, The Pokemon Go event, which will take place in Chicago on July 22, is not the first of its kind. People started playing the game naturally from the start descended on cities like Sydney, Australia to form their very own.


But, it is the first official real-life event, and hence the official location for Pokemon Go's one-year anniversary. Yep, Pokemon Go will celebrate its first birthday this July.

 

Although it's unclear if there will be any major in-game incentives for visiting Chicago's Grant Park – for the time being, developer Niantic is simply offering "the chance to meet fellow players and engage in a variety of activities" and "a ton of exciting festivities"

Depending on whose news release you read, Paul Tassi of Forbes makes a compelling case that this is unlikely to be the location of Niantic's first legendary Pokemon appearance.

Niantic said it plans to hold more real-life events throughout the world in the coming months, including a "Pikachu Outbreak" event in Yokohama, Japan. If you want to attend the event in Chicago, tickets will go on sale on June 19 at 10 a.m. PT at this website.

The Solstice Event – the previously disclosed Fire and Ice event — includes the aforementioned Pokémon kinds (meaning greater spawns of these Pokémon), "large" XP bonuses for properly tossing the Poké Ball, and reduced Lucky Eggs from the game's store.

Niantic has also vaguely promised additional features in the coming months, while simultaneously warning that Gym functionality would be temporarily disabled in preparation for these additions. Niantic is hazy on what these new elements are, but they will "bring you outdoors exploring the world with family and friends," with collaborative-focused features coming shortly to the game. According to an interview released last month, player-versus-player (PvP) gaming may be included.

Finally, Niantic has planned real-life Pokémon GO activities, beginning with a celebration called Pokémon GO Fest. On July 22, the event will take place in Illinois, Chicago, USA. Niantic is keeping the "festivities" for the occasion under wraps, although tickets will be available at the event at pokemongolive.com/Fest.

The event will take place on July 22nd in Chicago. There aren't many information about the event yet, save that it will take place in Grant Park in the city.

Niantic said there will be a number of comparable events throughout the nation for people who can't make it to Chicago. From June through September, more Pokémon Go events will take place around Europe. The business also promised "Pikachu Outbreak," an August event in Yokohama, Japan, where they would try a "special Pokémon Go experience." Finally, Niantic announced the Solstice Event, an in-game event that will run from June 13th to June 20th and will offer, among other things, higher encounter rates for select Pokémon.

Niantic and the Pokémon Company have already conducted a few in-game events, so it's not unusual to anticipate some game modifications for the anniversary.

Pokémon Go has been downloaded over 750 million times, and although game activity has decreased somewhat since its release, there are still over 65 million players worldwide.

"It's been an incredible first year for Pokémon Go thanks to the passion and dedication of the global Trainer community," said Niantic CEO John Hanke in a statement. "As part of the first anniversary, we'll be giving players around the world the opportunity to enjoy fun in-game events, engage with friends and other Trainers at real-world events, and much more."

Update: The Pokémon Go website offers another detail: shortly after the Solstice Event concludes on the 20th, there will be an update focusing on "collaborative group gaming elements" (we're thinking PvP or something similar). Nevertheless, before it occurs, the team will deactivate the current gyms for a "brief amount of time."


 

 

After the event, an update will be released that will include group-based gaming elements. Raids and Legendary Pokemon are anticipated to be included, however this has yet to be confirmed.

The only drawback is that Niantic will have to deactivate gyms for a brief time to prepare for the upgrade.

But that isn't the only thing Niantic has in store for Pokemon Go in the next weeks and months.

Biology Medicham is a humanoid, bipedal Pokémon that resembles a yoga practitioner. It has a gray body with red and yellow adornments.
