We're just four days away from tickets for Pokémon GO's huge live event in Grant Park in Chicago being on sale, but we still have no clue what it is other than "festivities." But, when the event was announced, it was hinted that further worldwide events would follow, and a number of them have since been described for Europe. And I don't believe they are what people expected.
When Niantic first mentioned summer live events, many have assumed that this is how Pokémon GO would finally add Legendary Pokémon into the game. This concept was inspired by both the first video, which depicts a large group of players fighting Mewtwo in Time Square, and Niantic's repeated statements that both live events and Legendary Pokémon will be added to the game this summer. These two items were supposed to be related, but that does not seem to be the case.
From June 17th through July 30th, a series of live Pokémon GO events will be hosted in Unibail-Rodamco retail centers around Europe. And...what can they hope to discover there? According to the official Facebook announcement:
"During these events, you'll be able to snap photographs with Pikachu, meet other Trainers, and capture a lot of Pokémon at the many PokeStops that will have Lure Modules enabled all day!"
So, no doubt, it's a "Meet Santa" event with one of those inflatable Pikachus. There will also be a lot of lures up since Unibail-Rodamco malls have a lot of sponsored PokeStops in them.
This is nice, I mean. It's still fun to have small Pokémon Go gatherings, but the popular misconception is that since a few dozen of these live events were publicized throughout the globe, they must be Legendary events.

I've stated it before and will say it again: Niantic will not limit Legendary spawns to a few chosen locations throughout the globe, and that is not the point of these live events. Given that these events begin in two days and end at the end of July, I won't rule out the possibility that Legendaries will appear at these events at some point (certainly not in two days), as Niantic has promised them this summer, but they will not be the only place you can find them, as they will have to spawn in more places than just a few dozen hotspots around the world.
Nevertheless, since Niantic's goals are so hazy, players are forced to make educated guesses about what these events are. In this scenario, these elements indicate something that may be
entertaining, but "meet Pikachu" seems to be focused at a younger audience, and there will most likely be just a few booths and few lures.
I still think it's insane that four days before tickets go on sale for the much bigger Chicago event, there are still no information about what will be included. We now have additional information regarding these mall activities. Niantic has mentioned nothing about the actual substance of the meet-up, despite the fact that individuals will have to book flights and rooms and pay for tickets. It is an issue that must be addressed, and I will return to it another day.
Until then, if you want to attend one of these European mall festivals, go for it; just keep your expectations in check. The following are the dates:
– June 17: Paris, France - Les Quatre Temps – Cnit
– June 24: Paris, France - Centre Commercial - Rosny 2
– June 30: Munich, Germany - Pasing Arcaden
– July 1: Oberhausen, Germany - CentrO Oberhausen
– July 8 & 9: Copenhagen, Denmark - Fisketorvet Shopping Center
– July 15: Madrid, Spain - Parquesur
– July 21: Barcelona, Spain - La Maquinista
– July 29 & 30: Stockholm, Sweden - Mall of Scandinavia
I hope Pikachu is nice in real life. You know what they say, never meet your heroes.
